There is a new study out there that shows a surprising natural substance that can help in preventing and treating tooth decay and gum
disease. This ingredient is licorice. Licorice is traditionally used in Chinese medicine and two substances found in the root are able to help kill the major bacteria that causes tooth decay.
The dried root of the licorice plant has a way of enhancing the activity of other natural ingredients. In traditional medicine, dried licorice root was used to treat a variety of ailments including respiratory and digestive problems. There is still more research to be done to see the effectiveness of the root in modern medicine. As always, it is best to check with your doctor before trying any new medicines. In the United States the licorice root has been replaced with anise oil in domestic candy.
Researchers found the two substances in licorice root that have antibacterial properties are licoricidin and licorisoflavan A. These substances were shown to kill two of the major bacteria that is responsible for dental cavities and two bacteria that promote gum disease. Licoricidin was also shown to kill a third gum disease bacterium. All these substances could help treat oral infections. This study was found in ACS’ Journal of Natural Products.
