Snoring is a common aliment for many people. A large percentage of the population know of someone who snores or they maybe a snorer. It may keep you up at night, so here is some information on how to stop the snoring.

Causes for Snoring

The sound known as snoring is caused by an obstruction of the nasal air path. Air can’t get through the normal way. The tissue vibrates and creates a chainsaw-like sound. There are many causes for the tissue to vibrate. They include sinus problems, being overweight, sleep apnea, age, consumption of alcohol, bad sleeping posture, and even the way your throat was built. Men snore more then women. As a man ages and gains weight, the snoring can get worse. Most times snoring is caused by simple, harmless things, but it can be a sign of something serious.

Medical Treatments

To stop snoring, one treatment involves installing an apparatus on your face or in the throat. There is a machine known as CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) that blows pressurized air into the nasal passage through a mask. This usually helps in cases of sleep apnea. Another devise that helps is worn in the jaw that can keep the airways open. There are also surgical treatments to help widen nasal passages. Laser versions of the surgical procedure are also used. These are easier to perform and less painful. But there is not a great success with the laser procedure. Many patients find they still snore.

Stop Snoring by Yourself

Before you take the step of surgery to help stop the snoring, there are a few things you can try out at home.

  • Lose weight: Snoring is often linked to obesity. Exercise can help reduce fatty tissue that is found in the back of the throat. This will also help improve your sleeping posture.
  • Clear the nasal passage: If you have sinus congestion, then try to clear it out as much as possible before going to bed. One way to do this is by inhaling water and then blow your nose.
  • Control bedroom moisture: Dry air will make snoring worse. Try using a humidifier to add more moisture to a room. The moisture will help keep the dry air from irritating the tissue in the nasal passage.
  • Throat exercises: There are simple techniques that will help expand the throat. You can try practicing open vowel sounds or curling the tongue. Try practicing for about half an hour a day to help stop snoring.
